LASPNET PARTNERS WITH OXFAM TO FACILITATE INCLUSIVE LAND REFORMS

On Tuesday 21st August 2018, LEGAL AID SERVICE PROVIDERS NETWORK (LASPNET) signed a partnership agreement with OXFAM in Uganda to implement a one-year project titled “Campaign for pro-poor, effective and inclusive land reforms in Uganda” under its strategic goal of the right to be heard.

The project was awarded to LASPNET after a competitive process under the OXFAM Sudden opportunity grant that looks at immediate threats that need collective action. This project will be implemented as a consortium in partnership with Action Aid International Uganda (AAU) and Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) Uganda with LASPNET taking the lead role.

The project’s overarching aim is to influence reforms towards adoption of pro-poor, effective, inclusive and sustainable government policies on land. The project is funded by the Voice, on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and is managed in a consortium by OXFAM Novib and HIVOS.

Some of the key activities to be implemented include: conducting of research on land governance in Uganda; regional consultative meetings with the marginalized communities on key issues affecting enjoyment of their land rights; strategic engagement with MPs on land governance and reforms at national and local levels amongst others.

Speaking at the signing, OXFAM in Uganda interim Country Director, Mr. Vincent Koch stressed that “this project is about reaching out to the marginalized people we normally don’t reach giving them a voice to speak out their view and realities.”

Voice across the world is implemented by OXFAM Novib and HIVOS. The Voice project is a multi-country project that is being implemented in 10 countries across the world with 6 of them being in Africa and the rest in South East Asia. In Africa, the project is being implemented in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Niger, Nigeria and Mali. In Uganda the Voice project aims at supporting:Women living in exploitation and violence; persons living with disbailities, elderly andyoung and ideginous ethic minorities.Other partners that received funding from OXFAM in Uganda through the Voice grant include: Human Rights Network Uganda(HURINET-U); Help Age International and the Uganda Albinism Umbrella.
