LASPNET PARTICIPATES IN MAKERERE UNIVERSITY 5TH HUMAN RIGHTS EXPO AND CONFERENCE

EXPO In a bid to extend knowledge and awareness on legal aid, human rights and access to justice as a whole, LASPNET participated in the 5th Annual Human Rights EXPO and Conference held on the 11th and 12th April 2018 at Makerere University. The event hosted by the Makerere University Ethics and Human Rights Association (MUEHRA), School of Liberal and Performing Arts, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, in partnership with Net Impact Uganda attracted participation of both state and non-state actors such as such as; Uganda Human Rights Commission, United Nations Population Fund, Human Rights Center Uganda, Platform for Labour Action, Public Interest Law Clinic, SAFEPAL and LASPNET.

LASPNET EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR NOMINATED FOR UGANDA LAW SOCIETY AWARD

The LASPNET Executive Director Ms.Sylvia Namubiru Mukasa was recently nominated  for the Award  by the Uganda Law Society in the Human Rights Lawyer category for the year 2016/2017. She was nominated alongside Mr.Nicholas Opiyo, the Executive Director of Chapter Four Uganda and Mr. Ladislus Rwkafuuzi, a lawyer with Rwakafuuzi & Co.Advocates,who emerged winner.

    Human Rights Focus(HURIFO) notes with grave concern the continuing wave of insecurity that has so far claimed lives and left score of people with serious injuries in and around big farms such as in Karatye, obira west, Alingiri and Lii in Nwoya districtand Apaa again in Amuru district. The insecurity manifest in continuous arrests,torture, arsons, and sometimes killing by some UPDF soldiers, individual wealthier people guarded by police or army.A case in point involved a 66year old Jathim, Pyrino Akwanga of Obira East Village, Latoro parish, Got Apwoyo Sub county Nwoya district who has lived in the area since1970s.

ABOUT LASPNET

The Legal Aid Service Providers Network (LASPNET) is a national member NGO established in 2004 to provide strategic linkages and a collaboration framework for the Legal Aid Service Providers and maintain a common front to interface with various actors in the Justice, Law and Order Sector in Uganda. It targets three critical aspects of coordination: a collective role bringing together different LASPs for solidarity in strategizing, sharing lessons and experiences, while minimizing duplication; capacitating them through collaborative research and analysis ; as well as documenting, providing needed feedback, and amplifying voice on key issues regarding access to justice/legal aid at regional, national or international level.
