On 10th August 2016, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and seven of his colleagues were expected to appear in Makindye Chief Magistrates’ Court to answer charges of police brutality against innocent civilians in:  Criminal Miscellaneous Application No.6061 of 2016, Uganda Vs IGP General Kayihura and 7 others.

DISABILITY ACTORS MEET CHIEF JUSTICE ON MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS

Disability stakeholders led by the National Union of Disabled Persons in Uganda (NUDIPU) convened at the High Court on Thursday 7th July 2016 for a meeting with Hon. Bart Katureebe, the Chief Justice of Uganda. They presented a memorandum on inclusion of persons with mental illness in access to justice. This followed a petition filed by Center for Health, Human Rights and Development (CEHURD) and Yiga Daniel in partnership with NUDIPU suing the Attorney General

The Poor,Vulnerable and Marginalised fail to access justice in Uganda

At the close of 2015, LASPNET delivered a key document to the justice sector in Uganda, in the form of a research report on Poverty, Marginalisation and Vulnerability in the context of Access to Justice. The report which was launched on 15th December 2015 in Kampala, by Lady Justice Elizabeth Alividza who represented the Principal Judge Yorokamu Bamwine, highlighted the staggering differences between rural and urban dwellers in accessing justice and the court system.

    On 28th and 29th October 2015, LASPNET held two meetings at Piato Restaurant in Kampala where members received two researches for validation.

    In a bid to propel issues of access to justice onto the agendas for 2016 electoral candidates, LASPNET launched an “Access to Justice Manifesto” at a conference held on 22nd October 2015 at the Kampala Serena Hotel. It preceded the 6th Annual General Meeting for the Network.

      Members of the Legal Aid Service Providers Network converged at Kampala Serena Hotel on 23rd October 2015 for their 6th Annual General Meeting. The meeting sought to review progress achieved in the period July 2014 to June 2015 and set the pace for the activities in July 2015 to June 2016.

    On 17th September 2015, LASPNET met with a team from Role UK which is conducting research into areas prioritized for development in the rule of law space in Uganda and to identify Ugandan project partners they may be able to work with. The team consisted of Nigel Priestly, Ranjit Uppal and Charlotte Cracombe. The LASPNET team consisted of Ms.Sylvia Namubiru Mukasa, the Executive Director, and Ms.Berna Bakidde Kiberu, the Programmes Manager.
