LASPNET GBV AWARENESS DAY EXCITES THE RESIDENTS OF BUKOLOTO; KAYUNGA AND SURROUNDING AREAS

FUN FEST AND COLOUR AT THE GBV AWARENESS DAY IN BUIKWE

LASPNET with support from European Union convened the launch of the GBV Annual Awareness Day in Buikwe district at Mehta grounds in Lugazi on 19th May 2022. The awareness day was part of the interventions under the EU supported two-year (2020-2022) project titled “Empowering formal and informal justice systems to respond and handle Gender-based Violence (GBV) in the districts of Mukono, Kayunga and Buikwe”

     The Legal Aid Service Providers’ Network (LASPNET) in partnership with National Social Security Fund (NSSF), on 29th April 2022 conducted a Legal Aid Open Day at Boma grounds and an outreach at Kabalye Remand Home in Masindi district. The event was organized under the theme “Promoting Legal Aid Employees’ Rights by bringing Justice closer to the People” and was presided over by His Lordship Hon. Justice Byaruhanga Jesse Rugyema of Masindi High Court Circuit attracted a total of 133 clients (85-male and 48 female) who flocked the grounds to seek legal aid services on legal issues affecting their communities especially in relation to land grabbing, corruption, human rights violations and abuses among others.  Also in attendance were justice institutions such as Uganda Prison Services; Judicial Service Commission; Uganda Human Rights Commission; Local Government; Legal Aid Service Providers and Media.

    On an annual basis, LASPNET brings together its CEOs who are heads of the LASPs institutions to deliberate on a wide range of issues pertaining access to justice and legal aid service delivery particularly topical and or pressing matters. This year’s LASPNET 7th CEO’s Forum was funded by International Development Law Organization (IDLO) and held on 13th April 2022 at Hotel Africana under the theme “The role of LASPs in enhancing sustainable Legal Aid Service provision in Uganda.”

ABOUT LASPNET

The Legal Aid Service Providers Network (LASPNET) is a national member NGO established in 2004 to provide strategic linkages and a collaboration framework for the Legal Aid Service Providers and maintain a common front to interface with various actors in the Justice, Law and Order Sector in Uganda. It targets three critical aspects of coordination: a collective role bringing together different LASPs for solidarity in strategizing, sharing lessons and experiences, while minimizing duplication; capacitating them through collaborative research and analysis ; as well as documenting, providing needed feedback, and amplifying voice on key issues regarding access to justice/legal aid at regional, national or international level.
