LASPNET Gets New Executive Director

The Legal Aid Service Providers Network has got a new leader! A familiar face in the legal aid field, Ms Sylvia Namubiru Mukasa has been appointed the Network’s new Executive Director, succeeding Mr. Richard Nsumba Muganzi who held the position for one year after serving as the National Coordinator for the same organization for over six years.

ISER ED appointed as Expert member on the working group on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in Africa

LASPNET would like to congratulate her former Board Chair and Executive Director of the Initiative for Social and Economic Rights, Ms Salima Namusobya for being appointed as one of the expert members of the Working Group on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in Africa at the African Comission on Human and Peoples' Rights. This was revealed at during the 17th Extraordinary Sesssion held from 19th to 28th February 2015 in Banjul, The Gambia. It is a window of opportunity to engage with the African Commission and comes in an opportune time as this year, Uganda will be reviewed by the African Commission at the session which will sit on 21st April to 7th May 2015. LASPNET to Commemorate World Day of Social Justice 20th Feb

Social justice is "justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society".  It  is  an  underlying  principle  for  peaceful  and  prosperous  coexistence  within  and  among nations. Social justice can  be  upheld in a number of ways such as  promoting gender equality and the rights  of  indigenous  peoples  and  migrants  such  as  the  right  to  health,  education  and  favorable employment,  among  others.    It  is  therefore  imperative  that  initiatives  geared  towards  removing barriers  faced  by  people  because  of  gender,  age,  race,  ethnicity,  religion,  culture  or  disability  are promoted.

    On Friday 21st November 2014LASPNET elected its 4th Board of Directors. Mr. Sam Nsubuga, the Chief Executive Officer for the African Center for Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (ACTV) becomes the new Chairperson for the Board of Directors, replacing Ms Salima Namusobya, who has served in the position since 2012.

    KAMPALA - Government has been urged to fast-track the passing of the National Legal Aid Policy and Bill into law to help regularize the activities of legal aid providers. Lady Justice Solomy Balungi Bossa of the Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court made the remarks while opening the 5th Annual General Assembly (AGM) of the Legal Aid Service Providers’ Network at Protea Hotel in Kampala on Saturday.

The Legal Aid Service Providers Network (LASPNET) is a national member NGO established in 2004 to provide strategic linkages and a collaboration framework for the Legal Aid Service Providers and maintain a common front to interface with various actors in the Justice, Law and Order Sector in Uganda. It targets three critical aspects of coordination: a collective role bringing together different LASPs for solidarity in strategizing, sharing lessons and experiences, while minimizing duplication; capacitating them through collaborative research and analysis ; as well as documenting, providing needed feedback, and amplifying voice on key issues regarding access to justice/legal aid at regional, national or international level.
