The Legal Aid Service Providers Network, LASPNET, will on 21st November 2014, elect new members to hold positions on the Board of Directors.The Positions up for contestation include Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, General Secretary, Treasurer, Regional Representatives of the North, West, East and Central regions.

A call for Concerted Strategic Interventions in Criminal Justice

One of the most fundamental freedoms protected by the Constitution is personal liberty. This right may only be derogated in accordance with the law set out in Article 23 of the Constitution[1]. The Constitution also protects an accused person’s right to a ‘fair, speedy and public hearing’. This includes the presumption of innocence until guilt is proved[2]. It sets out robust enforcement mechanisms for the enforcement of individual rights.

UGANET- Next steps on the HIV Law Legal Challenges

The Uganda Network on Law, Ethics and HIV/AIDS (UGANET) met on 20th October at Metropole Hotel to deliberate on the next steps on the HIV law legal Challenges. The meeting was attended by 11 senior lawyers and the organization's CSO representatives including medical professionals among others. The main focus on the meeting was to evaluate what it will take to petition the constitutional court over the feared impact of the law.     The Justice, Law and Order Sector on October 30, 2014 awarded the prestigious and inaugural JLOS Recognition Award (JRA) to various individuals for their outstanding service. These included former Minister of Internal affairs, Hon. Hilary Onek, Justice, Henry Peter Adonyo, Justice Richard Buteera, Justice Asaph Ruhinda Ntengye, His Worship Gadenya Paul Wolimbwa, Mrs Christine Guwatudde Kintu, Mr. Ernest Bafaki, Mr. George Kasajja and Mrs Josephine Onya Wasike. The award ceremony was presided over by the Ag. chief Justice, Justice Stephen Kavuma.

ABOUT LASPNET

The Legal Aid Service Providers Network (LASPNET) is a national member NGO established in 2004 to provide strategic linkages and a collaboration framework for the Legal Aid Service Providers and maintain a common front to interface with various actors in the Justice, Law and Order Sector in Uganda. It targets three critical aspects of coordination: a collective role bringing together different LASPs for solidarity in strategizing, sharing lessons and experiences, while minimizing duplication; capacitating them through collaborative research and analysis ; as well as documenting, providing needed feedback, and amplifying voice on key issues regarding access to justice/legal aid at regional, national or international level.
