LASPNET’S 9th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING USHERS IN NEW BOARD OF DIRECTORS

On 26th October 2018, LASPNET members convened at Hotel Africana for the 9th Annual General Assembly (AGM) of the Network. This was an electoral AGM that saw a new Board of Directors ushered in to serve for the next two years (2018-2020). The AGM is the highest policy making organ of the Network that discusses and recommends issues for implementation by the Board of Directors. It was attended by 64 participants (26 male and 38 female) with representation from 30 organizations

PARLIAMENT GIVES ATTORNEY GENERAL 30 DAYS TO TABLE THE LEGAL AID BILL 2018

On Thursday 27th September 2018, Members of Parliament displayed a united front when debating the request to allow the tabling a motion to present a Private members Legal Aid Bill. 2018. This followed a passionate presentation by Hon. Lyandro Komakech, MP Gulu Municipality and the mover of the private members bill. This motion was seconded by Hon.Veronica Eragu, the Woman MP for Kaberamaido who justified the need for the bill saying it would enable citizens access justice irrespective of their economic and social status; greatly reduce the costs for family maintenance, reduce case backlogs in courts of law as well as address the land rights of women in Uganda.

Her Lordship Dr.Winifred Nabisinde said this as she officially launched the crowd funding software for Lwengo district. Crowd funding is an online fundraising software that allows collection of modest amounts of money from many people into a pool that realizes sufficient funding for a particular project or activity.

The Legal Aid Service Providers Network (LASPNET) is a national member NGO established in 2004 to provide strategic linkages and a collaboration framework for the Legal Aid Service Providers and maintain a common front to interface with various actors in the Justice, Law and Order Sector in Uganda. It targets three critical aspects of coordination: a collective role bringing together different LASPs for solidarity in strategizing, sharing lessons and experiences, while minimizing duplication; capacitating them through collaborative research and analysis ; as well as documenting, providing needed feedback, and amplifying voice on key issues regarding access to justice/legal aid at regional, national or international level.
