The Legal Aid Service Providers’ Network (LASPNET), on 25th August 2021 conducted a Legal Aid Open Day in Kyegegwa district. The open day received over 200 people across the district who flocked to different set up centres at 5 sub counties to seek for free legal services on legal issues affecting their communities especially in relation to Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV)

On 19th April 2021, LASPNET led a delegation comprising of selected Secretariat staff and Legal Rapid Response Lawyers to engage with the office of the Principal Judge. This engagement came off as one of the strategies proposed by the LASPNET Rapid Response Lawyers and Paralegals, after continuously experiencing bottlenecks in Bail application within various Courts of Law.

Joint CSO statement on enforced disappearances of Ugandan citizens since November 2020

Since November 2020, Uganda has seen a wave of arrest and detention of its citizens by security operatives in the run-up to its 2021 elections. On 4 March 2021, the Minister of Internal Affairs released a list of 177 names to Parliament of missing Ugandans in detention following arrest. Earlier, in response to a public outcry over the disappearances, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni had acknowledged the arrests of 242.

Uganda just like other countries is grappling with Gender Based Violence (GBV). Whereas Uganda scores highly in enacting gender responsive laws and policies including ratification and domestication of key human rights instruments to curb GBV such as the Convention on Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW); 1995 Constitution and Domestic Violence Act (2010) as well as setting up law enforcement agencies and structures such as the Police and the Judiciary to better respond and handle GBV, the vice remains rampant

On 23rd October 2020, LASPNET convened its 11th Annual General Meeting at Hotel Africana in which a new governing Board of Directors for the year 2020-2022 was elected. The General Assembly is the highest policy organ of the Network, and is convened each calendar year. It was a hybrid event with both physical and virtual participation. A total of 74 (42 Male: 32 Female) participants who included LASPNET members and Staff of the Network attended the AGM.
